I know Talib Kweli for years, I met him before he really had a name for himself and was doing 12″ inch singles with Rawkus right before he blew up with Mos Def and Black Star… So we go back.. but he first approached me to direct a video for him when he saw the video for “A Star is Born”. After he saw it he inbox’d me the line from the video “I’ll Kill the Fucking Snake” and then added “Yo! son, we gotta do a crazy video like that for me”. So he sent me the song.

If you’re unfamiliar with the other half of Idle Warship, she is soul singer RES, here’s a little doc they did on her.

The crew was super small and really only consisted of myself directing and Ethan Blum & Jed I. Rosenberg of (the Brood Babies) co-directing and Michael Misslin, who did the cinematography on the Psalm One video I directed as well.

I can’t reveal where we shot the hospital footage cuz… well we weren’t supposed to be there. I went all around NYC looking for hospitals that would allow me to shoot and when no one would let us I had to think up other alternatives. Like shooting someplace after hours where we weren’t really allowed to be.

A Couple Funny Moments On The Set:

When I’m on set I get the job done, but I’m not always the most professional guy. RES is a respectable female and while I was directing a scene I told the camera man: “Maybe move the camera over to the right a cunthair.” I didnt even realize I was saying anything out of the norm but my usage of the word “cunt Hair” kind’a caught RES off guard to say the least. I didn’t mean to offend anybody but i just talk the way I talk while I’m directing and sometimes I forget I’m not around a bunch of my boys. If I was on set with Timbo King, Vinnie Paz or Ruste Juxx type dudes I guess “Cunt Hair” might’ve been a little more acceptable.

I had some white girls in the back hanging out on set with the equipment, They were smoking weed, joking around, having a good time.. And then they decided to start Planking. It was all fun and games in their minds, but then Talib Kweli enters and sees the planking taking place and ruins the fun for the little white girls. He explained to them that planking started from slavery and that it was wack. The girls stopped planking, stopped laughing and became quiet.

Sam the Sleezebag was the Prop King that supplied all the shit in the video. Res‘s teddybear in the video was courtesy of Toys on Chains.
